Dance of the Butterflies

This piece was composed in 2001 and is scored for three flutes.

First there was just one butterfly, flitting between the branches of a 'butterfly bush'. It was soon joined by a second butterfly, and then a third. From then on the three fly around the bush and the garden, sometimes independently, and sometimes around each other, as butterflies do, until in the end the last butterfly disappears from view.

The irregular time signature of 13 / 8 with a grouping of 3, 3, 3, 4 is intended to give the feeling of the slight but natural irregularity of their flight behaviour, without seeming too contrived. The balance between parts would need careful handling by the performers.
